1. Fateh Sagar Lake

Fateh Sagar Lake is one of the must-visit lakes in Udaipur. Though the lake was built in 1678 by Maharaja Jai Singh, the lake is named after Maharaja Fateh Singh, who made a dam and enlarged the lake.
The lake is surrounded by mountains and in the lake you will find many type of birds wading on the water, or flying over the surface.
Go boating in this lake, or just walk along the Fateh Sagar Pal, which is a walkway made for tourists. There is an aquarium nearby with many colourful fishes, and many sunset points.
You can ride a camel, refresh yourself with tasty snacks and drinks which are available near the lake.
In the evening, colourful lights illuminate the entire lake, and it’s one of the best times to come here.
You can come here after visiting Moti Magri, and from here, you can see the white colored fort on top of a hill called Sajjan Garh Fort.
Best view & boat ride at Fateh Sagar Lake
Fateh Sagar Lake is in west Udaipur, and you must arrive at Maharana Pratap Smarak by taking a local Auto, to get the best view of the lake for free.
You can also plan a boat ride that will cost you from Rs 15 to Rs 200 (speedboat) per person.
The boat ride timing at Fateh Sagar lake is from morning 8 am to 4:30 pm.

2. Pichola Lake

Lake Pichola is one of the largest lakes in Udaipur, and it’s also one of the most scenic ones. This is the first lake that you will see in Udaipur the moment you come to Udaipur.
Lake Pichola is so famous in Udaipur, that you cannot leave Udaipur without going on a boat ride on this lake.
It’s one of the major attractions of Udaipur, and every tourist wants to go see the scenic sunsets that can be enjoyed while boating on this lake.
Lake Pichola has many islands, on which you will find milky white marble palace, the Taj Lake Palace, which is one of the world’s leading luxury hotels, and Jagmandir Palace, which has a beautiful garden.

3. Doodh Talai (Milk Pond)

Dudh Talai, literally means ‘a pond of milk’.
You wonder what’s behind the name of this lake, and the answer is that during reign of royal kings, cows used to graze on this ground, and provide milk to the royal family.
And thats why it’s called Dudh Talai 🐄🐄
It’s one of the smaller lakes in Udaipur, and lies adjacent to the much bigger Lake Pichola.
But, it’s a wonderful little lake, complete with its very own walkways, on which you can sit long periods away from the busy streets of Udaipur.
There are gardens near the lake and a musical fountain and you can go on horse rides or camel rides near the lake.
Dudh Talai ropeway
If you are not afraid of heights, ride the cable car on the ropeway that goes to the top of the hill to Karni Mata Temple from Dudh Talai.
The views from the top of the hill, and even from the cable car are spellbinding and shows you great views of Lake Pichola, Taj Lake Palace, Sajjangarh Palace, City Palace and the nearby areas.
4. Badi Ka Talab (Jiyan Sagar)

This lake actually was built to save the people of Badi village from a devastating drought back in the 17th century. That’s why the lake is also known as Badi ka Talab.
Jiyan Sagar as it is popularly called now is less crowded than other lakes, but the hills surrounding the lake and the tranquil atmosphere will make the lake even more appealing to visitors.
It’s one of the most scenic lakes in Udaipur, and tourists should come here as part of their day’s outing from Udaipur, as it takes around half an hour to reach the lake from Udaipur city centre.
How to reach Badi ka Talab?
Badi ka Talab is 13-14 km away from Udaipur Railway Station, and you can hire a taxi from Udaipur to reach Badi ka Talab.

5. Udai Sagar Lake

Udai Sagar Lake is on the eastern side of Udaipur city and more close to Udaipur Airport (Maharana Pratap Airport) and from the city, you need to travel around 13 km to reach Udai Sagar Lake.
There’s a little bit of history about this lake.
Kunwar Man Singh, Akbar’s most trusted generals met Maharana Pratap on the banks of this very lake, and told him to surrender to the Mughal emperor.
Maharana Pratap refused to surrender and this led to the great battle of Haldighati near Udaipur. Maharana Udai Singh built a dam on the river Ahar, as a result of which this lake was formed.
Best time to visit Udai Sagar Lake:
You can come here during the monsoon season and see the mesmerizing beauty of the surrounding regions.
Mornings and evenings are best to come here and sit for hours on end just gazing at the scenic beauty all around.
6. Goverdhan Sagar Lake

Although less crowded than most lakes in Udaipur, Goverdhan Sagar Lake is a serene lake of Udaipur.
It’s been developed as a prime tourist spot in Udaipur, and here you will find proper walkways and seating arrangements on the banks of this lake.
Refreshments are available in restaurants near this lake.
Best time to visit Goverdhan Sagar Lake:
Come here in the mornings and you will see the lake at its most beautiful. Auto rickshaws and taxis are available from Udaipur to this lake.
7. Swaroop Sagar Lake (Khumaria Talab)

Swaroop Sagar Lake or Kumharia Talab, was built by Maharana Swaroop Singh in 1842, and is connected to Fateh Sagar Lake and Lake Pichola through water channels
This lake is a visual treat for whoever visits Udaipur, as is close to the old city of Udaipur, where you explore the famous Udaipur sites like
- Jagdish Temple
- Bagore ki Haveli.
An interesting feature of this lake is that it has a fully functional dam, and when the dam releases water into this lake.
It’s one of the most beautiful sights to see in Udaipur.

Other lakes of Udaipur
Technically, in Udaipur there are 2 main lakes (Fateh Sagar Lake & Pichola Lake) and all others are just outside the city. Thus all the below lakes ate outside Udaipur, but less than 50 km radius of the city.
8. Rajsamand Lake

Location: Rajsamand, 60 km from Udaipur
One of the most beautiful lakes outside Udaipur is Rajsamand Lake.
Rajsamand Lake was formed as a result of a dam built by Maharana Raj Singh in 1660.
If you are planning to visit Kumbhalgarh Fort from Udaipur, then you can stop here is its on-route, around 50-60 km north of Udaipur.
Here, you can soak in the serene atmosphere of the lake, and admire the hilly surroundings of the lake. But the most spectacular attraction of Rajsamand Lake is the nine marble ghats also called ‘nav chawkis’.
Here you can see the history of Mewad etched on the pavilions and cenotaphs.
There are torans or arches where kings used to distribute their wealth after tuladan, which was an annual event in bygone times.
Sunrise is the best time to come here and see the beautiful scenery & to reach here, its best to hire a cab from Udaipur (Google Rajputana Cabs).
9. Jaisamand Lake (Dhebar Lake)

Jaisamand Lake, located south of Udaipur city, 50-60 km away is also known as Dhebar Lake, is a clean lake with beautiful surroundings.
This lake is among the largest lakes near Udaipur, & in fact, it’s so large, that it comes second in the list of the largest artificial lakes of Asia.
Maharana Jai Singh built a dam on the Gomti river, and as a result, this dam was formed in the year 1685 and a boat ride on this lake will give amazing sights to see.
There are as many as seven islands in this lake, and Bhils, the tribal people of Mewar region still live on these islands.
There is a palace too on one of the islands, and on the banks, there are cenotaphs with extremely delicate carvings on marble stone.
Nearby there is Jaisamand Wildlife Sanctuary, where you can see bears, deer, and other animals, besides a number of birds and do checkout the luxury resorts nearby where you can stay.
10. Badi Madar Lake

Badi Madar is now as big as above suggested lakes near Udaipur, but it is definitely one of the most picturesque ones near Udaipur.
And why not!! The entire lake is surrounded by lofty mountains, making the scenery one of the most stunning in the entire Udaipur.
It’s one of those lakes where you can actually go near the shores and wade into the waters for some cool fun.
If you are an avid birdwatcher, then this lake has many birds which you can spot with your binoculars.
Best time to visit Badi Madar Lake in Udaipur
Monsoon is the best time to come here, as you can see the overflowing dam and can even have a bath in the flowing waters.
You can go to Madar village from Udaipur, and then walk up to this lake through well laid out tracks.
You will go through green pastures and rural farmlands on the way to this lake.
11. Choti Madar Lake

Both Badi Madar and Choti Madar supply water to Fateh Sagar Lake, and Choti Madar is also one of the most scenic lakes near Udaipur.
Coming here is like going to an untouched rural paradise and green surroundings.
You will enjoy coming to this lake, which is 20 km from Udaipur.
You will pass through rural farms and village houses, and see green fields on the way to this lake.
Come here at the time of the rainy season, and you can see superb natural beauty of this region.
The overflowing dam releases water that eventually goes on to fill the Fateh Sagar Lake.
12. Purohito ka Talab

To the north of Udaipur, 15 km away, Purohito ka Talab is developed to be a replica of Jaisamand Lake.
In fact, it’s called ‘Mini Jaisamand’, and you can see ghats just as in Jaisamand Lake.
Here you can sit for some quiet moments on these ghats and see the beauty of this lake.
As this lake is situated away from the city of Udaipur, you will see mountains of the Aravalli range all round this lake.
Take food and water with you on your way, as both the trips to and from this lake may take more than 2 hours.
13. Bhatewer Lake

Tourists may not have heard of this lake near Udaipur, making Bhatewer Lake or Bhatewar Lake unheard of. Maybe because it’s unknown to most tourists, it’s untouched beauty will charm you more than anything else.
The lake is quite beautiful and mornings is the best time to come here.
At this time, most birds are active, and you will have to take binoculars with you to watch them around this lake.
Bhatewer Lake is situated 32 km from Udaipur, and you have to travel for around 1 hour to reach this lake.
You will not see mountains around, but the place is immensely scenic and worth coming to in your trip to Udaipur.
14. Menar Lake

Menar Lake is quiet far from Udaipur – 40 kms and a drive of around one hour – but if you want to see migratory birds, then you must not miss this lake.
Every winter, migratory birds from Siberia come here to this lake, and you can see Pelicans, Flamingos, Geese and other water birds fly in flocks over the surface of this lake.
Nature photographers, bird watchers, nature lovers, and common tourists all will enjoy coming to this lake.
If’s one of the most serene lakes near Udaipur, and nearby there is lot to be seen like a huge idol of Lord Shiva.
15. Chikalwas Lake

63 km from Udaipur city centre, Chikalwas Lake is one of the most beautiful lakes around Udaipur.
You will have to drive long for about 2 hours to come here at this lake.

16. Bagela Lake

This lake comes on your way to Eklingji Temple, one of the most famous and ancient temples near Udaipur.
The lake is a splendid sight and there are mountains round the lake and green fields of the village.
Bagela Lake is 20 km from Udaipur, and a cab will take half an hour to reach there.
You can sit here for some time before leaving for visit to Eklingji Temple.
17. Lakhawali Lake

It’s not so famous in Udaipur, but you can come here to spend some time among nature.
18. Mansi Wakal Lake

Located 40 km from Udaipur city, Mansi Wakal Lake is a beautiful lake surrounded by pristine natural beauty.
Though it takes about an hour’s drive from Udaipur, you will love this lake due to its clean blue waters.

The lake is situated in rural village and everywhere there is raw natural greenery of trees and open fields.
19. Nela Pond

Also called Nela Talab, Nela Pond is very close to Udaipur city – just 9 km away, and after about 20 minute’s drive in cab, you will arrive here at this lake.

20. Bagdara Lake

It’s situated at a distance of 18 km from Udaipur and a drive of 40 minutes should take you to this lake.
Besides the lake, there is one of the best nature parks in Rajasthan, the Bagdara Nature Park.
It’s a good place to see crocodiles, snakes and other reptiles. You can even spot birds around the lake.

21. Jhameshwar Mahadev Pond

This small lake is one of the most tranquil natural lakes near Udaipur.
Jhameshwar Mahadev Pond is named after a Shiva temple by the same name.
The pond is located at a distance of 25 km from Udaipur and it’s a road journey of around an hour.
This lake is a good picnic spot and you can bring your eatables here and have a good time in natural surroundings.
There is a small waterfall here where people come to bathe in the rushing waters of the waterfalls.
You will see quite a few birds too in the nearby woods.
